New Residents to Georgia

New residents moving to Georgia have 30 calendar days after establishing their residency to register their vehicles. The out-of-state vehicle registration is no longer valid after the 30-day period.

New residents moving to Coweta County from out of state are required to provide a valid Georgia driver’s license or Georgia ID card with the current Coweta County address before a license plate can be issued. For information on how to obtain a Georgia driver’s license or Georgia ID card visit www.dds.ga.gov.

The following is a list of items that you will need to bring into the Coweta County Tax Commissioner’s Office:

  • Original out-of-state title issued in the owner’s name OR if the lender or leasing company is holding the out-of-state title, the original valid out-of-state registration in lieu of the title. Our office will also need the name and address of the lienholder, Loan # and Electronic Title Number (ELT)
  • If the vehicle is leased, the lease agreement is required
  • Valid current out-of-state registration
  • Current mileage
  • Valid Georgia driver’s license or valid Georgia ID card with the current Coweta County address for each owner
  • A current Georgia emissions test. For testing locations, exemptions, and exclusions visit www.cleanairforce.com.

If there is a lienholder: the Georgia title will be mailed to the lienholder on file.

If there is no lienholder, the Georgia title will be mailed to the registered owner at the address on file.
